Week 77  This week we get the brackets that hold the lower wing in place.

The bits we received

And what we did with them

There is a slight problem with these parts, but it's not all bad.  The problem is that the angle between the short bits, with the two holes in them, and the long rods is wrong.  This means that the front rods would not go in the holes in the fire wall, and the channels in the rear rods would not slip over the brass fuselage spars.

The fix not only gets round the problem perfectly, but it also makes the lower wing easier to assemble when you get to that stage.  Let me explain.  With the assembly as per the original instructions, we were left with some long sticky out bits front and back.  It would have been quite difficult to get the brackets on the main spar in place at the same time as trying to get the front rods in the hole sin the fire wall, and the rear rods over the spars, especially when they have glue on them.  The fix is to cut off the long rod and glue them separately after the lower wing has been installed.  This will greatly simplify fitting the lower wing.

Here's how to do it.  Take the parts, and cut them as shown below.  The metal is brittle and cuts easily and cleanly.

The parts will separate as in this next picture.  Do this to all four pieces, then tidy the cut faces up with a file.

Take the shorter parts, and glue them to the brackets supplied last week.  I used super glue for this.

Finally, glue the four small pieces in place, and keep the cut off parts safe and sound.  I resorted to my favoured Araldite for this.

Note that if you have already glued the parts in place you can still cut off the longer rods and achieve the same result.

Hot tip of the week

I understand that Hachette are going to publish this in issue 91, which is when you start covering the lower wing.  This is fine as you won't do anything more to the lower wing until then.  Covering the lower wing will also be much easier without those rods getting in the way.
